I think they come to understand certain words over time. I have four cats (one is still a kitten), and they all seem to know their name, they come when I call them and they also know the word NO. If they are doing something they know they shouldn't, I can say "NO" and they will usually stop, but just like a kid, they sometimes continue to see just how far they can go....so then I'll say.... "Don't make me get the water bottle!" When I say 'water bottle' they stop what they're doing and take off running!! One of my female cats makes me laugh because when I say that she will stop, squint her eyes at me and then slowly turn away and stalk off to pout.

I could disagree with people who say cats won't be in a position to appreciate English like we do. Cats and canines, so I even have study, have a matching intelligence to an regularly occurring 3 year previous newborn, besides the indisputable fact that a number of my pets could regard that as an outrageous insult, i'm helpful. My cat knows her call and has conversations with my husband and me wherein she constantly has to have the final be conscious. She makes use of diverse tones for somewhat some issues and surely each so often has an abrupt, indignant "miaow!"

I think they are about as smart as dogs and can understand a vocabulary of about 100 words. I know my cat understands some of the stuff I say and pretends not to understand other things.

I think just by the tone you use that they do understand. I have 3 cats and they each know their name. They also come when they are called. Each time I go into the kitchen they are right there thinking they are going to be fed and I say no, you were just fed, and they walk away. It's funny.

Cats and Dogs can recognize the tone of what you say and can read facial expressions. Although cats do interpret them slightly differently than we would.

Haha, yeah, definitely! Mine always acts all pleased when I tell him how handsome he is, and I've got him trained to follow me when I say the right words! And then, my other cat always glares and me and stalks off when I tell her she's seriously overweight.

i think that cats hear but only noises they don't actually hear words and understand them as we do. but they are smart and remember the tones. so the answer to this is yes they hear and no they don't hear exactly what we do.

I had a Siamese, named Snoopy Ling, for 19 years and I know he understood every word! Once he was begging my mom for food, well here's what happened..
Snoopy.. "Meeeooow!"
Mom.."OK just a minute Snoops.Let me finish this."
"MEEEEOOOOWWW!"
"OK. I said hang on!"
"MEEEOOOWW MEEOOWW!"
(5 min of this conversation)
"OK here you go"
She pours food in his bowl ....
"What are you waiting for you asked for food?"
(I swear this happened!)
"Mee..NO"
"WHAT DID YOU SAY??"
"MEE NO!"
"How DARE you say no to me! You wanted food I gave you food and you tell me NO!"
That cat ran out of the kitchen and hid for about 3 hours! I was laughing so hard I couldn't breathe!
so based on what I heard yea they understand us!
