I have seen people refer to an AK-47 or sumthing that looks just like it, if it is in fact a different weapon, an SKS. But they told me it's shorter that an AK but still holds 7.62 mm

So it's the same thing? Or is it a different gun?

Completely different firearm, however they do share the fact that they were both designed in the USSR during/after WWII and they share the same ammunition (for logistics sake).

After caliber, there is nothing at all the same between the two. SKS is a semi auto carbine, not unlike the US M1 Garand and M1 Carbine in operation.

The AK is an automatic weapon that the Russians developed that is a design imitation of the German Sturmgewehr 44 developed under Nazi supervision.

Hitler, by the way, invented the term "Assault Rifle" as propaganda, just like Josh Sugarmann invented the term "Assault Rifle" as propaganda. (Sorry for the political commentary, but when comparing a SKS to a AK, it's inevitable)

EDIT:: The SKS and the AK were developed completely separate from each other and the SKS is not the predecessor of the AK.

Siminov, designer of the SKS, based it on a much larger caliber anti-tank gun he had designed and made to use against the Nazi tanks.

Kalashnikov, designer of the AK-47 or "Avtomat Kalashnikova 1947" was a competing designer and therefore, never saw Siminov's designs. He based the AK on the Stg 44, although he greatly simplified the action, making it the successful firearm that it is.

Yes, and SKS is a different weapon. Semi-auto, fixed 5 round magazine standard. Inexpensive alternative to the AK variant. I picked up a Yugo for $120 this spring from Southern Ohio Gun, plus $25 to my FFL dealer for the xfer fees..

The Sturm Gewahr STG44 is the predecessor to all modern semi-auto rifles, The SKS was designed by Kalisnikov's Boss, before the AK, forged receivers where the AK is often a stamped receiver. It's not shorter the AK in fact my Yugo is longer. both fire the 7.62x39 round.

Same exact caliber 7.62 X 39 ..But that is the only common ground. The SKS and the AK-47 were designed by 2 different people at different times...

The SKS came first; it is the granddaddy of the AK47. Sort of like our Garand is the granddaddy of the M14. The SKS is chambered for the same 7.62x39 cartridge the AK47 shoots; it is ideal for humans, antelope and deer, and is used around the world. It is simple, rugged, reliable and if you clean it once every five or six years it lasts almost forever.

Check your source, a SKS fires a 7.62x39, it was designed to reach out and touch objects from a long distance with great accuracy but what makes this weapon so popular is its ability to rapid fire. It can be used as a assault weapon. Go to TAPCO.COM check it out.
