my mom is looking to pull up carpet in a 400sq ft living room and replace it with pretty much anything...what are some durable, kid friendly, affordable options? Right now it looks like the cheapest may be tile vinyl...is this correct?
Thanks in advance!

I take it your mom doesn't want to put carpet back in? If this is the case you should check into some laminate. I recommend either Quickstep or Armstrong brands. You can have it look like wood or tile and it will usually last about 20 years. If carpet is still an option, it will be your least expensive choice, then look into a Mohawk Smart Strand - warrantied for the life of the carpet ( 7-10years) not to stain or discolor from anything you can eat or drink. It's also very soft and just as durable as nylon. Hope this helps and Good Luck.

We went to a local flooring shop called Floor and Decor. We were able to find an amazing deal on snap and lock laminate wood flooring. It looks like hardwood, but is sooo much cheaper. We spent maybe $0.70 to $0.80 per sq ft to floor our home. We have 4 dogs and 2 kids so we definitely got rid of that nasty germ filled bacteria nest also known as carpet. We also chose a laminate tile for the living room and dining room that looks like a rust colored slate stone and it was pretty cheap too. I know Home Depot or Lowes still carries a version if it for super cheap. I think it's a peel and stick so it's easy to install too. With the snap and lock, you will need a saw to make cuts, but it really does just snap down into place and looks so good!

for the record, our laminate tile covers a very large area (there's no visual division from living room to dining room, it's very open) and it looks great.

I doubt if an area of 20x20 would look that good in vinyl tile. Granted, it would be the cheapest way of going, especially if you can find discounted items or discontinued tiles.

You may be able to find carpet remanents from a commercial job and pick that up faily cheap also. There are also sights like craigslist and there is another one where everything is free. I can't remember the site but it is something like freestuff.

good luck.

Check out your local carpet store's remnant selection. You might be able to find a bottom of the line berber, which is very durable, for $100-$200. You would have to install it yourself and use the existing padding though unless you want to invest more money.

craigslist.com has an area specially for free or for sale. most things are dirt cheap since homeowners bought the item for themselves, has extras and no longer want them.
