Why go to a psychiatrist who isn't crazy?

Why go to a neurosurgian who doesn't have a brain tumor?

Why go to a male OB/GYN who has never had a period, a baby or menopause?

Why trust a judge who has never committed a crime?

Answer: You can learn about things by observation. A priest doesn't have to experience marital problems himself in order to learn how to help couples rebuild their relationships, any more than a psychiatrist needs to be bi-polar in order to help a really depressed person.

Besides, most priests grew up in households with parents, and most have siblings and friends who are married, so they know quite a bit from personal observation. Almost all of them dated at one time, too, so they have personal experience with the opposite sex. Also, they receive training in seminary on counseling couples.

They can help by being objective and fostering better communication to the couple, as well as a re-commitment to the marriage -- just like any other counselor the couple may choose to see.

Kind of like going to a junk yard to find a new car.

It's like making a blind man the designated driver.
