I've never been a rider myself but my son is interested so I'd like to indulge him...but I want to go about it intelligently and provide him with all the necessary gear, etc. The challenge will be doing it on a budget so I plan on using an online auction site if possible, but I need to know what to look for. Can anyone help?

Suggest starting him with the small 50cc models. Speed will not be an issue. And easier for him to control.

You need to make sure he knows how to maneuver and stop it. I used paper plates for my grandchildren. Place them so he has to drive between them without hitting any. And learn to stop accurately. That is stop with a front tire directly on a plate.

His riding needs to be confined to relatively flat terrain and no water hazards.

As contributors mentioned. Needs to have basic body armor. And a VERY GOOD helmet.

IMO, 4 is way to young to ride an ATV.
