My son has had perfect attendance. My daughter never gets it. I think it is ok to recognize it, but I think more importance should be placed on academic achievement. I do know a couple of mom's who don't send their kids to school if they don't want to go which I strongly disagree with. And good attendance helps kids do better in school. But I don't think you should ever send a sick kid to school just so they will get perfect attendance and I would never do that, but I know some people who do.

I don't personally think that anyone is that obsessed with the reward. I do know that this past summer my daughter's school ran a special "summer academy" and the kids were promised a new book bag if they had perfect attendance. It helped when my daughter wasn't actually sick, just didn't really want to go. I would never send a sick child to school.

My daughters school attendence policy is outrageous, it doesn't matter if the child is sick or not they have to be in school or stay after school once they are well to make up for the time missed.
And the make up time, isn't really make up time, she had to spend a couple of hours last year when she had strep throat and missed a few days, and the teacher sent her papers up to color. There was no reason for that.

That being said. I think awards for perfect attendence are fine, its the policies and laziness of certain parents that send thier child to school. God forbid they miss a day of work.

I agree with some of the previous posts. Not only does this encourage kids (and parents to send them) to go to school ill possibly spreading the illness and not allowing hte child to recover quickly, it also punishes children who are sick and have to stay home. Don't think it should be award at all. How can you Not give a child an award because they were sick!? "Sorry little Jonny honey you don't get that award becasue little Tommys mommy sent him to school and made you (and probably half the class)so sick you couldn't go!!!!!" UGH! good question....got me going. Star for you! :)

The rule at my house is if you have a fever, you are vomitting, or have diarrhea THEN you can stay home. Colds? headache? sniffles? Take some meds and you go. That's goes for my husband and I as well as the kids.

I know that here in Chicago there are parents who send their kids to school sick especially the 7th graders attending public school. The criteria for the selective enrollment high schools in the city is based on a kid's 7th grade and looking at several factor to come up with total points and one of the factors is attendance. It;s super competitive with thousands of kids vieing for very few slots. I'm pretty sure I'll put more pressure on my son to have perfect attendance next year . I won't sacrifice his well being though but I swear I'll be running around with anti-bacterial gel everywhere he goes. : )

Yes my child has had perfect attendance, and no I've not sent them to school sick to keep their record. My child just doesn't get sick much. I think there is nothing wrong with the award. Like someone said earlier that it was meant for motivational purposes, but it doesn't really work for that very often.

When I tried to get out of school my mom would always say to me, "if you're well enough to watch tv, you're well enough to go to school." I've had perfect attendance before. But I think for the safety of the kids, there should not be an award...it's really not that important as long as the child gets the education they need. I would like to think that NO parent would intentionally send their child to school when, instead, they should be in the hospital.

Nope on both questions
Some parents feel that a child will miss out on something if they dont have perfect attendance but any time my child was sick/with fever i kept him home and hes ok with no awards because he got lots of awards for other things

Some parents do send their kids to school sick, but they are missing the point. My kids thinks that a hangnail is a reason to stay home sick. The awards are intended to motivate kids to want to go to school...I don't think they work though.

I know that whenever i claimed i was sick my parents would say ok u can stay home but make sure u think of what your missing and how much your going to have to make up and then decide if your really to sick to go .... if i did stay home they'd say i was to sick to go to school so im too sick to go out n e where else and the following day even if i did go to school i wasnt allowed to go n e where afterwards because i was so sick the day b4 that i should rest..... i know people in my high school that would come to school really sick to maintain their record .... in most cases it wasnt their parents it was them...i admit i have gone to school sick numerous times sometimes i went home early other times i stuck it out ... when u get to high school there to much information to make up if u miss so most of us just dealt with it and went sick n eway but thats high school .....
