I have a group of 4-8 people flying into Newark on Friday, the 21st. We plan to stay until Sunday the 23rd. We would like to visit NYC, specifically Manhattan. What is the cheapest way for 4-8 people to go into manhattan in the morning, and go back to the Newark area in the evening?

New Jersey Transit trains run right from the Newark airport station (take the monorail to it) to Penn Station, midtown Manhattan. If memory serves, it's about $8-10 each one-way. You aren't going to find a cab that cheap.

If you really want to be cheap, you can carry all your bags off-airport (take the shuttle to L/T parking, then keep walking along the edge of the airport) and catch a Newark city bus to downtown Newark (the bus should be $2-3 each) (Newark city buses that reach the airport itself cost a bit more), where you switch to PATH trains to Manhattan (I forget the fair). A lot of efffort, especially with bags; I'd stick to the train.

Take the PATH from Penn Station in Newark. You can go either to the WTC or towards midtown with stops at Christopher Street, 9th St., 14th, 23rd, and 33rd. (http://www.panynj.gov/CommutingTravel/path/html/)

Your cheapest bet is probably some form of public transit. You could rent a van which split between all of you wouldn't be very much but parking would become a problem there.

I would say either by Subway or by Bus
Taxis are pretty pricy.
