YOU should join Al-Anon! He's an alcoholic and he's only going to get sober unless he wants to.
Meanwhile, you've got to get your own thinking straight about him, which Al-Anon will help you with.

Hi,
My experience in a 12 step program is that if an Alcoholic doesn't think he has a problem he will not believe he needs help. Also, drinking a six pack a day doesn't make a person an Alcoholic. If the person honestly tries to stop drinking and cannot he might be an Alcoholic. The 12 step program helps people find out if they are Alcoholics. This is what the 12 steps do. You can get a hold of an AA book and become familiar with the doctors opinion. You can go to an Alonon meeting to find support. You will find people who are just like you that live with a functioning (possible Alcoholic) and they can help direct you in what you can do "1st" for yourself and second possibly how you can work with your Dad to help him understand your concern...

The Alonon central office can be found in the yellow pages and or the internet.

I hope this helps...
Take care...

I know this is probably not the answer you want to hear, but you cannot help your dad unless he wants to help himself. In any addiction, there is what is called the 3 C's. That is..you did not cause it, you cannot control it, and you cannot cure it. Express to your dad how his drinking makes you feel. After that, it is up to him to get help. Focus on yourself and what you need to do to bring peace to your own life.
May I suggest going to a Families Anonymous meeting. It's a program that focuses on the well being of people who have an addict in their life. It has done wonders for me. You may also find an online support group under the same title.

Try calling his doctor or yours, tell them the situation and see if they can't help, also get a list of different things they will be going through when their liver gives out.

If he drives after drinking call the cops (harsh, maybe but it might kick some sense into them).

Videotape him when he's drunk, it might show him a side he's not expecting.

If you think he's in danger: yellow eyes (the whites turn yellow) or if his skin has a yellow tint to it, do something fast.

Mostly, he won't quit unless he wants to.

I was in a similiar situation. Find the nearest Alanon meeting and through them you will learn how to help them and what makes the situations worse. It will be okay. They will help you learn what will help your dad.
