Have you checked the oil lately? If the oil is very low, you've found your problem, unfortunately. If you haven't changed the oil in a very long time, that could also explain what the problem is and you don't really want to know. Dirty oil clogs up the oil ports and prevents it from lubricating various components that lead to premature engine failure. Used to, sometimes knocking was because the octane rating was too low for the engine. You might try using a tank full of higher octane of gasoline to see if that helps it. But, without knowing the make, model, year and mileage, that's about all I can tell you.

I believe that's called a startle response, and though I don't know if it is or isn't a part of generalised anxiety disorder, I DO know that it's quite a common symptom in PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). I jump horribly and get nauseous, heart pounding, skin clammy sometimes, just from a car backfiring, or firecrackers .. while my friends will just carry on normally.

Don't know how to overcome it, as it still happens .. but now that I know the reason WHY it happens, I find that I can mentally talk myself into calming down much quicker.

I believe that's generalized anxitety disorder. I live in the LOUDEST apartment ever and there is constant sudden really really loud noises and my heart feels like it's going to come out of my chest and I can't breathe. It's a real ***** to live with. Your doctor can give you xanax or ativan for this. I've started Lexapro as well and while I've only been on it 4 days, it seems to be helping (though it could just be a "placebo" effect as I believe the drug takes 2 weeks to kick in). I agree that cold water does help as well, makes you feel like you can breathe a little better

This is all just another "PART OF" anxiety.
When in an anxiety attack- with many people (including myself) your ears become much more sensitive and thus any sounds, especially the louder sounds are amplified.
When the "extra" neurons fire off in the brain creating anxiety, it effects all the senses.
Hearing, speech, vision, taste and even physical touch/feeling.

i think that that is just another form of anxiety. try to find a quiet p;ace and get some cold ice water and drink that. then blow all the old air out of your lungs through your nose and then take a deep breath in through your nose all the way down to your stomach and hold it for the count of 3. then exhale out of your mouth and do this a couple of times and then if you have some antianxiety meds then you should take them as prescribed by your doc. i know that when my kids are fighting or there is a lot of noise i get overloaded and this is what i have to do. hope that this helps

Startle reflex is normal.

You just have to prepare yourself mentally by talking to yourself in your mind. If it happens in a certain place just remind yourself to expect it.

These are really not a threat to your life, so it is something that you tell yourself is frightening to you.

earrplugs, or move...if you can't move,..then try to just accept it as a living condition of where you are for now...it won't last forever..so look for that silver lining and keep focused forward
