Except for some beaches, are there any civilized societies that allow public nudity? I don't think there are any.

Why not?

KenshoDude - good comments, but I have 10, 8 and 6 years olds that couldn't care less if their faces were covered with peanut butter, ice-cream, dirt or whatever.

With American society going the way it has been (i.e. paralleling the Roman empire), I'm sure it will be legal very soon. As for why it isn't now, I really don't know. The traditional Judeo-Christian values upon which this country was founded (that's right, atheists, I said it!) require modesty in public.

(So-crates, that's DEFINATELY tmi. I'm just sayin'.)

EDIT: Bobo, which one am I right about -- Judeo-Christian values or So-crates' disclosure of tmi? ; )

In one word "prejudice". There is no rational reason. There are countries in Europe where nudity is a right. For example in Spain a police officer was prosecuted for harassing a guy who was cycling nude through a city. Attitudes have consequences and the consequences of prudery are horrendous. The reasons are well understood. AIDS kills people. Ever stopped to wonder why a teenager in the USA is so much more likely to catch it than a teenager in most European countries? Shoot a child by accident and it is a serious criminal offence. What should it be called when somebody encourage attitudes resulting in teenagers several times more likely to have an abortion, about ten times more likely to become pregnant, several tens of time more likely to catch a sexually transmitted infection. More eating disorders, sexually active younger, more promiscuous, the list just goes on and on. More prudish worse outcomes, often enormously so. Conversely there is not a shred of evidence that anybody of any age is harmed by nudity, either their own or other peoples. Harm due to body prejudice is harm due to the prejudice, not the body.

Why did we start wearing clothes in the first place? Shame. It develops very early in humans, around age 3 IIRC.

The way psychologists test for the presence of a self-concept is by illicting a shame response. They put a dab of rouge on the child's nose when the child is not paying attention. After waiting a while (to ensure they don't realize they have been "tagged') someone shows the child to a mirror. If the child gets embarrassed about having a spot on his/her nose, they figure he/she has developed a self-concept.

And not everyone is completely comfortable in their own skin. When that is the case, they are not really going to be comfortable with other people walking around nude.

Look up Brattleboro VT and you'll see that we recently blocked a motion that would have made nudity illegal in town. There are more important things to worry about. Yep, that's right. A town in America allows public nudity.

"The most boring thing in the entire world is nudity. The second most boring thing is honesty."
~Chuck Palahniuk

The only men I've seen nude are my sons when they were babies, and my husband. I don't have anything against nudity when it comes to my husband. He is the best!

Obcourse being naked is very unseemly an awkward to look at...It's not a normal deed in the public places.Besides our body is a temple of God.We should respect and take care of it...Okay?

Define "civilized." On second thought, better not. Anyway, how about Cap D'Agde, in France?

Because it isn't pretty seeing things like that in public. And definitely not if I am eating thank you.

I was a nursing aide for over seven years, if you seen one set of body parts you have seen them all. So it this I say , TMI.

Because the concept of genitalia is too taboo -- to expose any of these parts in our society, would only lead to the "degenerate downfall of man" -- it would drive people wild with desire ...
