Not just airlines but it seems other companies as well. Did you ever hear of a financially troubled company exec say "We will cut our salaries for the good of the company"? Of course not. That would be the moral thing to do.

What is the first thing a troubled company starts doing? Lay offs! Bingo! You win the prize! Then what do they do, shutdowns! Wait wait...I'm on a roll here...what is the last thing they do to save the company? Of course! How could I be that stupid? They pay themselves a bonus!!!

I don't know about the executives, but the ones taking your reservation sure do...overbooking by 5 or 10 per flight is just stupid and greedy to boot.
