On zales.com if you click on wedding you have 3 options. Promise rings, Engagement rings, and Anniversary Rings. The only rings I seem to like are the promise rings. Can you use a promise ring for an engagement ring?

I ask because my boyfriend and I have been looking, and those are the ones I liked. So can a promise ring be used as an engagment ring?

Sure. As long as you and your partner knows the meaning behind the ring then nothing else matters. You should get whatever ring you want and label it whatever you want. It's your decision.

An engagement ring is only an engagement ring because of the sentiment behind it. They call certain rings engagement rings in the store because of the size of the stone, however, you could get any ring you wanted! It's really just a marketing ploy by stores to say only specific rings are for engagements.

I'll probably get an heirloom ring passed down through my family as my engagement ring, but if I don't then I want an eternity or half-eternity ring. (These are usually used as anniversary rings.)

If you like the promise ring best, go for it! If your boyfriend gives it to you as an engagement ring, then that's what it is.

Honey, a mood ring can be used as an engagement ring if you want. An engagement ring is only significant because it's a symbol of a promise to get married and spend your lives together. There's nothing inherently significant in the ring itself, and rings with the title "engagement" on them don't have special promise-sealing properties that others don't.

You can use whatever you want for an engagement gift. I don't wear rings, so when my boyfriend and I made the "promise" to each other to get engaged instead of a promise ring he bought me a necklace.

We are planning to get engaged and I hate diamonds so we are looking at other gemstones... and instead of a ring it might be a bracelet or earrings. Any thing would be fine with me, because we know what they mean.

Not only promise rings, but ANY ring can be used as an engagement ring. The only requirement is that you love it!

Of course a promise ring can be used as an engagement ring, it matters what you like, you are the one that has to wear it not anyone else. It is a symbol of love between you and your bf. If that is what you like get it.

A ring, I feel, symbolizes whatever it's given for: friendship, parent/child love, engagements, promises, anniversaries. It shouldn't matter what the stores catagorize it as. What does the ring mean to you personally?

Engagement is a commitment between you and your partner, the ring has nothing to do with a engagement, it is just the symbol of the engagement, you can wear any ring you want to symbolize your engagement, includind a inscripted band! The ring should symbolize your relationship, and who your are as a partner, along with your since of style, basically it should fit who you are, not what a jeweler labels a ring as! Good luck and Congratulations!

An engagement ring can be whatever ring you love and want it to be. Remember ... zales is not the only jewelry store. Shop around... get ideas. There may be different diamond shapes sizes settings etc. that you do like.

You chose whatever you like and are comfortable paying for.

Remember, it's going to be on your finger for a long time and you're going to have to look at it.

My engagement and wedding rings are technically anniversary bands (according to the collections) but I liked them and they work for me.
