About 80 to 100 years after its founding a cult can evolve into an acceptable religion. Ex: Mormons, JWs, Adventist, Pentecostals.

The danger comes in the first 20 years where the cult may self destruct and fall by the wayside. Ex: Branch Davidians, Jones Town, Heavens Gate.

Hopefully Scientology will fall into the second category, but they have already made 50 years so they might last. Can you imagine a Scientology president

A cult is a group that gives absolute, unconditional allegiance to a human leader, not to God. In a true religion there are of course human leaders and ministers, but they are subservient to God, and the members of the religion look past their human leaders to God - not to Jim Jones - as the untimate authority and the object of their allegiance.
