I think some of that is true, they want people who are going to be fun.. but also, unlike other gameshows, where people test and tryout and know they are going to be on the show, TPIR picks people right out of the audience, they are surprized when picked and excited and act crazy.. they dont know they're going to be on the show until the name is drawn..

There are studio personnel that gear the audience into demonstrating a specific demeanor. The Price is Right has a specific demeanor they want out of their contestants. The louder and excitable, the more entertaining for television viewers.

Those people who get hysterical already know prior to their name being called that they might be called down to the front row. It is a completely rehearsed response.

They are deliberately picked because of the craziness. Would you laugh and get excited if you saw a person that just stood there not jumping and screaming? It would be one boring show.

They say that's how they pick them. The more excitement they show, the more likelyhood they'll get picked to "come on down!!"
