I assume you mean that you have cable modem service. The first thing to do is to get yourself a router so that you can share your connection with your computer.

Next step once the router is procurred, to connect the PS3 to the router, either by using wireless, or a wired connection.

Once connected to the network connection, click on the sign up on the far right side of the XMB, and that will walk you through the account setup (free).

Get a router, hook up your PC and PS3 to it (it's easy). It's better to get a router, that supports VPN connection. I use D-link DL-604. No problems.
