I am planning to put a valance on our big dining room window. I need something for privacy, though, since it faces our neighbor's house. Will sheers work under a valance or would you suggest something else. I currently have those cheap horizontal blinds that are about $10 and would like to have window treatments that are somewhat nicer. I haven't bought anything yet, so if you want to suggest something other than valances for the dining room, I am open to suggestions. Thanks.

sheers work very well under a valance!! they keep a bit of privacy while the valance decorates the top of the window.

Since I never draw the drapes where I have sheers hanging all they do is decorate the edges of the window. Unnecessary expense to put in full width drapes in that case.

You can try to get the sheers that puddle on the floor or not. they will look really nice.

I worked in the decor dept. of Home Depot for a year and suggested many window treatments to various customers. Sheers underneath a valance will work perfectly fine, you will just need either a double curtain rod, or two separate rods if you're looking for more decorative rods. Although, sheers are not very private...you can see right through them. You could also use roller shades cut to size and just draw them down when you need privacy (and still use the valance and sheers).

If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Go here https://tr.im/10WEn
Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.

Yes. Just be sure that they have enough opacity to give you the privacy you need.
