My brother is the same. When he has the pen in his hand he acts like he is scared to move it around. I tell him to ease up and to just let the letters flow. I tell him not to get scared of moving his wrist and fingers around. You try that too.
The key to handwriting is to keep everything in a straight line. I tell my brother to imagine that there is a line in the middle of the two lines. All lower case letters should JUST touch the invisible line and all upper case letters should touch the visible line on top. Also, when you use the computer go to Word or notepad and look at your pick of cursive and print in large fonts and try to imitate that.
You should also remember that if you take too much time worrying about your handwriting your writing speed will eventually decrease. It is a more valuable asset to write fast than to have good handwriting. Good Luck!! Oh yes, be sure to use a nice, fun, and exciting pen to encourage you to write, because boy is writing a monotonous task!

Hi .... my hand writing is awful too... I am age 43 and its still yuck. What i was told to do was get one of those kids learn to write books and just trace the letters.. It worked to some extent.. I was also told to slow down a little when writing and that worked some too.. Finally I was told to get a comfortable pen... as stupid as it sounds.. but I found that there are soft grip pens and pens which take upo the shap of how you hold them. I was supprised to find out that i actually held the pen too tight and it caused discomfort and thats one of the reasons for my poor handwriting.. And becasue i have been writing this was since age 3 I cannot really change my handwriting dramatically... Although since i have been using the soft grip pens my writing is better and more readable...

Stop using ball point pens and go buy a long nibbed ink pen. Practice writing with that slowly on ruled paper. You will surely improve.
