My son has been diagnosed with tourettes syndrome.

Our family has a pre-disposition, and it was “turned on” by ADD medication (a stimulant. We stopped the medication, but the tics stayed.)

He had:

“Puppy” sounds
Chicken- head/ head bobbing motions
Head twisting
Grimacing
Stuttering
Blinking

Our family has a history of:

Obsessive compulsive
Migraines
Sensory interrogation syndrome
Attention deficient disorder (ADD/ADHD)
Tourettes syndrome

They all deal with dopamine levels in the brain- and all “Seem” to be related.

Along with this tics, he also suffers from disgraphy. (spelling?) Which is an inability to write cleanly unless special attention and time is taken.

My suggestion:

1.) Talk to your son’s school, and see if they have a neurologist they “prefer”.- if they don’t have one they prefer- find one that is a PEDIATRIC neurologist.
2.) Dig into your family medical history to see if the related problems exist so you can tell the neurologist. If NO ONE has these kinds of problems- also something to tell the neurologist, as it can point to causes and treatments.
3.) Our neurologist gave us paperwork, and the school system issued my son an “alpha smart” which is a small word-processor so he can type his work instead of write. (he’s in middle school)

Tics are very common in children so there are many parents who have children who have a tic like your son. The cause of tics is unknown but is thought to be stress. Tics usually go away on their own in time, which can range from a few weeks to several months. Tics are common in children and teens but usually not present in adulthood.

Tics do not lead to any health issues. If your son's tic bothers you tremendously or persists into adulthood (you don't mention his age), please see a doctor.
