Take a big breath and stop panicking!

It can take up to 10 years for cancer to develope after a pap smear showing high grade abnormalities.

Is this your first pap smear? Or did you hav a clear one in the past? Even f it is your first, unless you were sexually active at age 10 this is unlikely to be cancer.

You probably have genital warts - HPV or Human Papilloma Virus.

75% of sexually active people have this virus at some stage in their life.

In some cases warts (lesions) develope.

In some cases these lesions may turn cancerous.

Most women clear the virus from their bodies in 2 years even without treatment.

The news is likely to be good when you have further testing done, with removal of warts followed by monitoring being the only treatment required.

Do you have any info on what your doctor might think it is? It could just be dysplasia, which is abnormal cell growth but is not cancer. Are they doing a biopsy or your cervix?

I had a hystorectomy at 24 for severe dysplasia and at 40 I'm still here. :) Even if it turned out to be cancer (which it probably isn't) - if it is only your cervix involved, then you wouldn't have to have chemo or anything. For whatever reason, it stays localized on the cervix - it can't get into the blood stream.

Now, if they found out it was cancer AND that it had spread past the cervix you would probably need chemo. That's a lot of if's though. Hold tight and wait and try not to be upset. At this point, it could be anything.

Good luck.
