Well, let's see...it is not that we want to be the only one in our son's lives, just included sometimes, not forgotten. It is not that we are losing a son- look at glass half full- gaining a daughter! If half empty losing a son. Optimistic mother or pessimistic mother. Nor is it not that we are not as important to our sons any more. It's how the mother is treated and how the son treats his mother, how the 'wife' treats the mother. Mutual respect is the key. It is how the son/daughter-in-law treat one another. If back stabbing, then of course we will not like that person, Son or daughter in law. Depends on mother as well. How she was raised, how she raised him etc. If a respectful man, then will attract a respectful woman. The mother/daughter could be so alike they butt heads or visa versa.....they love/respect back. Guess it all depends on maturity as well. Girls and guys, look at each other's mothers, you will know by the way she acts as to what to expect. Expect to be treated badly, ye shall receive. If he is a momma's boy, expect to be a mother to him, if he can think on his own, she can think on her own, value one anothers opinions, thoughts etc- then you will live a happy life. Don't make the mistake that things will change if bad. May just have to close a few doors and move on. If you have a wonderful relationship with the man, but mummy gets in the way a lot, then be mature enough to close door gracefully/respectfully, stand ground- keep the peace, even if it means to bite the tongue every once in a while. No one ever said you have to be best friends. Cool if you are, if not don't mourn or dwell on it- accept for what it is.

Because some of the mother in laws are jealous, intrusive, and stick there nose in where is doesn't belong so the daughter in law wants nothing to do with them. The son rather not take sides so keeps out of it and plays dumb and yes's both wife and mother not to be the bad guy.

Because they can't stand the fact that their little boy is now a man and that they won't be the ones taking care of their son's needs. Or it could be the fact that they fear they will never see their son again. One other reason could be that she is just cranky. I don't know. I don't have to deal with that. I get along great with my future mother-in-law. In fact, she is pissed at her daughter right now because she had been free-loading us. (If there wasn't a three year old involved, she would be out of there in a second)

Rival to their son's affection. Mothers normally wants the best for their son and they want things to be done the way they do it.
Luckily for me, I get along well with my mum-in-law. We share a lot of things in common that her daughter said that her mum get along better with me than with her. But of course, her mum love her more. LOL.

I agree with Manny. I get along with my soon to be in laws as well. Now I can't say much for my soon to be husbands EX wife they hated her with a passion and tell me all the time how happy they are that I'm in his life and how lucky he is to have someone like me.
Makes me feel good.

I loved my daughter in law - in fact, sometimes we got along better than me and my son!! She was smart, pretty, friendly, and a very open honest person.

I think that's mainly something that's blown out of proportion, I'd be willing to bet that that the majority of mothers like/get along with their child's spouse and only .5% are the total witches they're rumored to be.

Mine loves me.
But because nothing is good enough for their boys They can feel replaced (in a way they are) as the most important woman in their little boys' life.
Same with fathers and their son in laws (though mine loves my partner)
