Generally, 14 hrs is recommended for the first charge. After that a longer charge is better than a rapid charge for camera batteries. Rapid charge for remote controlled toys is ok in some cases. A better charger will have a LED to monitor the charge rate and when the light is on and at it's brightest you know the batteries are at full charge. This also prevents over charging because the led circuit shunts the battery and as the battery's resistance changes, the rest of the current is passed to the LED. There is no real answer on how long a charge will last as that depends on several variables, such as how much you use your flash. Since the batteries are now so cheap, I suggest you have more than one set. I carry 4 sets in my camera's gadget bag as nothing worse than to loose battery power when in a case where I don't have access to electric even though my charger is also in the bag.

On a 'regular' charger, overnight (maybe 8 hrs). But you can get high-speed chargers that will charge them in an hour.

I have both kinds. I prefer the regular charger when I have time. The quick-charger works fine but it heats the batteries up more and I'm afraid they won't last as long (as many charges).

Also it seems like the quick charger doesn't charge them quite as much. I could be wrong about this, it's just an impression I've gotten, I've never actually done any tests.

The charging speed is a function of the chargers design. If you have the manual, READ IT. If you don't, look it up online and READ IT. You may be amazed at the information you find in the manual.
