Why don;t we send our worst prisoners to fight the war instead of our young men ? And if they do a good job they get a smaller sentence?
I just think we are spending to much money on them just to keep them alive and off the streets ,
Make them useful, I know it has been done in the 1940's in Russia , why not now ? Please this is not to be a joke , I feel if we let them sign on by them wanting to go ,, Why not ??
If some one has to die or is in for life any way , and wants a chance to redeem himself , why not ???
And would it work ?

I have said this same thing. Let them go over there and fight. Going AWOL will do them no good. They will be in IRAQ!

In Russia, they were used in such a way that their being killed was a probability more than a possibility. It doesn't take much training or intelligenceto run up to a machinegun position.
Modern technology is much to advanced for this. And, if you were in combat would you want someone aside of you who wants to be there, ( really, does anybody?) or is simply there because it might mean less jail time.?
I'd rather have the motivated individual i can depend on.

Hmmm, forced combat. Thats like reinstating the draft but throwing in the criminal element. Would you want a morally wrong person with weapons representing your country in the delicate middle east?
Their only connection to America or Americans would be the guy with the gun in control doing bad things in their country, their turf. They might never see any other perception of Americans except as bad thugs invading their homeland.
They would probably do inhumane things to the good people over there and maybe not take even a slice out of the bad people. Ya, bad idea.

Because they'd probably go AWOL. We have a voluntary Army right now and most of the soldiers fighting at the very least want to be soldiers. If you sent criminals to fight, they wouldn't want to be there and they'd probably desert as soon as it got too tough for them. There's also the expense of training them properly and people who can't fit in with normal society would certainly find military discipline too much to deal with. I also don't like the idea of violent criminals fighting along side our soldiers. It puts soldiers in even greater danger.
I agree that there needs to be prison reform but this ain't it.

For the same reason it did not work for the Germans in Russia, you can not control them. All the gang tension would still be there, except now they would be armed. A lot of them would return to crime, and then escape Iraq on there own.

Because prisoners have no self-discipline. That's why they're in the joint to begin with. They also have no respect for authority figures or the rules of organized society. If you give them a weapon they will use it on their NCOs and officers, rather than any enemy personnel. "The Dirty Dozen" was a movie. The Global War on Terrorism is reality.

Question for you, Why do our men and women join the service to begin with? Let me answer that for you....
It is to fight for our country, they have pride...Do prisoners have that pride? will they fight for our country? They were sent to prison so H3LL NO
Personally i would not want a rapist, or murderer on the side of my husband and son, as they both were willing to go, prisoners who do not want to be there is just asking for trouble, they could'nt go by the rules of america before they were imprisoned why would they go by it while in the service?

Fighting wars requires discipline, training, courage, dedication, and a willingness to go into harms way and possibly die. Felons generally have none of these qualities. They would be terrible soldiers. This is a terrible idea.

Something about training the worst of our society how to properly kill, and then giving them heavy arms just does not sit well with me...
