I know the PS2 liked ot crap out if it was vertical, I wondered if the more fragile, more expensive, but more advanced PS3 would have the same problems.

It's probably OK, but the machine is pretty heavy and awkward. They also put out a poo-load of hot air so make sure you don't restrict airflow. I wouldn't suggest enclosing it at all.

Having the system vertical will force the disc drive to work harder, causing more heat. Like what was said above, just don't restrict air flow and it should be fine.

Yes, it's safe. Wether you have it vertical or horizontal, it's safe. Just make sure the PS3 is well ventilated.

it should be ok but because the machine can get sooo hot i wouldnt recomend restricting any air flow at all u dont want ur $500 ps3 blowing up

Should be fine, it's designed to work fine that way.
Obviously, though, try not to move it whilst it's on (especially with a disc in), and make sure it's not somewhere where it can be accidently knocked over.

i have mine vertical, and i sometimes leave the system on for days while its folding and i never once had a problem with it

Well, I have it horizontal due to the lack of space, but it's designed to stand in both positions.

we have ours in the vertical position and have had no problems.
