i was in an accident yesterday and i just realized the air bag didn't go off.. (although I'm happy about it but worried that it means wont go off in an even worse accident.) is their a impact monitor that doesn't allow it to go off till it's really bad or what? a lady hit me from behind hard enough to get her hood stuck closed and messed up my bumper ...
thanks

You got rear ended. Airbags are not meant to go off in rear end or side collisions. The monitor is in the front of the engine. My car was totaled by a rear end collision and the air bag didn't go off either. Hope your okay.

Others have pointed out the airbags are designed to deploy when the collision is from the front, not the rear. This is a good thing because you might be injured by the bag if it goes off when it isn't needed. (In a frontal accident, the possible injury from the bag is much less than the possible injury from flying out your windscreen).

However, my sister was in a front end accident and the airbag didn't deploy either. You might have them check the connections to the airbag when you get the car fixed.

YES THERE ARE SENSORS AND MODULES FOR AIRBAGS.

Airbags deploy only when they might be needed to prevent serious injury. Frontal driver and passenger airbags are designed to inflate in moderate to severe frontal crashes equivalent to hitting a solid barrier at 10-12 mph. Some manufacturers use different inflation thresholds depending on whether people are using their safety belts. Thresholds of 10-12 mph typically are used for unbelted occupants, but thresholds are higher — about 16 mph — for belted occupants because the belts alone are likely to provide adequate protection up to these moderate speeds.

Side airbags are designed to protect an occupant's head and/or neck from striking objects inside or outside the vehicle in the event of a side impact crash. Because of the small amount of space between an occupant's head and the side of the vehicle, these airbags must deploy very quickly to cushion the occupant from any intruding vehicle or object such as a tree. Sensors detect when a crash is severe enough for deployment. Some curtain side airbags may stay inflated longer to protect occupants in rollover crashes. Allowing the airbags to remain inflated or triggering their deployment during a rollover can help prevent full or partial ejection of occupants.

Frontal air bags are designed to deploy in moderate to severe frontal collisions. These air bags are not designed to deploy in side impact, rear impact or rollover collisions. Safety belts provide your best protection in these types of crashes. Safety belts also help keep vehicle occupants away from air bags when they are deploying, thus reducing the chances of air bag-induced injuries. In addition, safety belts help position the occupant properly to get the maximum benefit from the deploying air bag.

they might. while you're sitting too on the edge of the steerage wheel, or have some thing in between you and the airbag because it deploys (which includes a cup.) a number of years in the past i grew to become into in an twist of fate the place somebody hit my Honda Civic so badly that the airbags deployed and the only on driving force's edge ended up reducing my arm (the seam on the edge minimize my arm around the elbow.) as properly to this, the powder that as interior (it incredibly is to sidestep the interior sticking collectively) landed on my bare legs (it grew to become into July and that i grew to become into donning a short skirt) and burned them- i grew to become into in discomfort for few days, icing it consistently. in spite of the incontrovertible fact that-airbags are nevertheless significant and can save our lives whilst used appropriate. in simple terms be helpful you place on seat belts as properly.

Airbag (SRS) isn't programmed to deploy from a rear impact.
