some people describe the body like unto a prison and to be resurrected in a body is not to be Free. therefore they believe that ascension is a greater hope. some people teach that jesus was resurrected NOT in a body but in the spirit, that he ascended to God not in body but in spirit.
can you defend the belief of either ?
whe jesus appeared to his disciples he said fear not, a spirit hath not a body of flesh and bone. paul said flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God but Jesus also invited his disciples to FEEL and SEE the wounds in his hands and feet.
Truly He must have been resurrected in a Body, paul describes a resurrected body as being incorruptible. Such a body can only be a temple, not a prison.
What do you say?

Jesus and all Christian witnesses teach the resurrection of the body. Jews have no concept of a disembodied spirit; that idea comes from Greek mystery religions. These mystery religions also developed the gnosticism that likens the body to a prison from which one must escape.

Jesus showed us what a resurrected body is like. As you indicate, his body could be hugged by Mary Magdalene or probed by a doubting Thomas.

Modern psychology, too, understands a person to be a physical body whose thoughts depend on neurological transmissions in the brain. We can't think or act without a brain. Thus, if our bodies are not resurrected by God, we have no life with him.

As to ascension, that appears to be a one-time miraculous event the occurred with Jesus, witnessed by his disciples.

Bruce

These are both true.

Jesus Christ was resurrected and ascended into heaven.

Resurrection means the rejoining of the body and the spirit, he overcame mortal death this way.

Since he does not live with us, he ascended. Ascension is different, it means to increase in glorified state, he returned to his place on the throne on the right side of God.

(This verse's background: Christ is risen—He appears to Mary Magdalene, then to others—He sends the apostles to preach, promises that signs shall follow faith—He ascends into heaven.)
Mark 16:19
So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.

The word descension is used to describe how Jesus first came to earth, he descended from his place in Heaven to be a lesser being, a mortal human.

The rest of us beings are going to go through a different process, we will die, we will be resurrected and we will be judged before we ascend ourselves. This isn't going to happen until the millenium, after Jesus returns to earth a second time.
Because he is the Son of God (I believe he is the Son of God) he has already passed through these steps (think of it as the detour route) since he was pure and made a sacrifice of himself for us, and he is half Deity, let us not forget.
This has made him loosen those bonds that make us wait for our transcendence.

So, whatever steps we have to go through after being resurrected to be able to ascend into heaven after judgment day, we don't know. Jesus was able to, so there's more to this philosophy and this doctrine than we know. We know then that it IS possible and we know we will find out one day for sure.

Jesus was resurrected with a spirit body. He took on fleshly bodies to strengthen the faith his disciples before he ascended. These bodies were manufactured flesh and bone but blood did not course through them. Very similar to bodies materialized by Angels prior to this. To take back a body of flesh and blood would have invalidated his sacrifice.

Jesus' invitation to "doubting" Thomas to feel His hnad, feet and sides is surely a great evidence of physical resurrection.

Jesus also ate fish at the end of one of the Gospel accounts.

Jesus' ascension only means something if he was occupying his physical body.

Any talk denying a resurrection is incorrect.

My answer to your question is neither they are both false assumptions.
Death is the transition of your spirit or soul from the physical body to a finer state of being.
This finer state of being can show itself & appear to us in exactly the same form as it's physical body was.
Hence the need for the story concerning the resurrection!

He asked not to be touched at one point as he had not gone to His Father yet. When he allowed himself to be touched, he had been to his Father. I think this is the distinction between the two.
Blessed Be
