Have you done it? How does it make you feel? I have to get on a plane tonight and I want to take the benadryl as a sleep-aid. FYI; I usually take my Zoloft at night.

PLEASE PLEASE READ THIS!

My brother just spent 10 days in the hospital because of a very similar thing like this. PLEASE contact your doctor before you do this!

My brother has been taking zoloft for 3 years and suddenly had severe issues with being able to sleep. He decided to take benedryl and he took it once a night for 3 days. During this time he also took seroquel twice. He ended up in the hospital in an EXTREMELY SEVERE panic attack. But no one put the zoloft/benedryl connection together and they basically thought the reaction came from the seroquel (an allergic reaction.) They told him to continue with the benedryl until he saw his doc the next week. His anxiety worsened to a point of the doctor's considering a diagnosis of schizophrenia! He ended up in a safe house for 2 days where they added lithium to the mix...and suddenly the zoloft/benedryl connection was made.

A few days later he was in ICU 3 counties away being detoxed from benedryl and zoloft and now lithium as well. He was told to NEVER take benedryl with his zoloft unless his primary doctor ordered it. And certainly NOT long term or even consecutively for a period of time. My brother has only been out of the hospital for a few days and is 100 times better now...Please please don't take benedryl without talking to your doctor first! I'm glad I noticed this question! How ironic that this just happened to someone in my family!

You should always check with a doctor or pharmacist if you're not sure whether it's safe to take two medications together. That's particularly true if one of them is an antidepressant as they tend to interact with a lot of things (MAOIs are by far the worst, and Zoloft isn't an MAOI, but other antidepressants have some nasty interactions as well). As far as I know it would be fine to take Benadryl and Zoloft together, but I'm not a doctor or pharmacist, and you shouldn't assume I know what I'm talking about. Hydrochloride is just part of the name of a compound, and there's no inherent reason that you can't mix two compounds that have that in their name (obviously that doesn't automatically mean there can't be any interactions, by hydrochloride itself isn't a reason). It basically just describes a chemical property of the compound that lets it be broken down into a form your body can absorb a particular way, so it's really common to see names of active ingredients in drugs that end with either hydrochloride or HCl, and it doesn't tell you very much about what the compound actually dose once it's absorbed into your bloodstream.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Benadryl if you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) in the last 14 days. A very dangerous drug interaction could occur, leading to serious side effects.
Before taking Benadryl, tell your doctor if you have
- glaucoma or increased pressure in the eye;
- a stomach ulcer;
- an enlarged prostate, bladder problems or difficulty urinating;
- an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism);
- hypertension or any type of heart problems; or
- asthma.
You may not be able to take Benadryl, or you may require a lower dose or special monitoring during treatment if you have any of the conditions listed above.
Benadryl is in the FDA pregnancy category B. This means that it is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Do not take Benadryl without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant. Infants are especially sensitive to the effects of antihistamines, and side effects could occur in a breast-feeding baby. Do not take Benadryl without first talking to your doctor if you are nursing a baby.
If you are over 60 years of age, you may be more likely to experience side effects from Benadryl. You may require a lower dose of Benadryl.

Don't ever take the sleeping pills route!!

1. They will damage your liver big time and you can get into serious health problems.

2. You will get hooked up on them and you won't be able to have a normal life any more if you don't take your pills everyday.

The sleeping pills industry is damaging our health by capitalizing on our ignorance, and by distracting people from effective and natural ways to deal with this problem. I had been taking prescription sleep medications [Ambien] for over 5 years. It stopped working and I simply took more. Still did not work. Nights were very difficult - medication put me to sleep but I would wake up after 2–3 hours with a strong sympathetic response (fast pulse, pounding heartbeat, wide awake alert). It was a very difficult cycle to break. I was really in bad shape due to lack of sleep.

After years of struggling I was able to cure my insomnia naturally and pretty fast. I followed the Sleep Tracks sleep optimization program, here is their official web -site if you want to take a look: http://www.insomniacure.net

Ohhh..and Good Luck!

My Dr and pharmacist have said it's OK to take together.

Infact my Dr. prescribed it.

BUT you should check it out with YOUR DR.

I wouldnt mix them just because of the fact that you could have some bad side-effects from it. If you do decide to take them both to gether i would just go to like krogers and ask a pharmasist if you wouldnt have any really bad side-effects. If they say it would be ok, go ahead.
