I can understand not coming to work all dirty and stinky or not coming to work dressed to go to the beach or something. But, why do people have to get so darned dressed up in suits and their hair done conservatively or whatever to go to work? Why not just some jeans and t-shirts or something?

You appear more competent when you are dressed in more than just a t-shirt and jeans. And that is the image your company wants to portray. If you want to see a prime example of this reason, go to a car dealership dressed in a nice suit. Then go back later on wear jeans and a T-shirt. There is a big difference in how you are treated depending on what you are wearing.

Because that is what is expected in many industries, pure and simple. It's one thing to work in a head shop all pierced, scarred, tattooed and dressed in torn jeans and T's. It would be an entirely different matter to show up for work in a bank that way.

If you got on an airliner today and saw that the pilot, instead of wearing the pilot's uniform, was wearing a wife-beater, flip flops and was busting a sag, would you feel particularly comfortable flying on that plane?

It's how people "pigeon-hole" you and judge you. It's the same thing with going to a job interview. They think that someone dressed in a nice, button-down shirt and suit pants/skirt is someone good for them. Yet I don't even care to count the many people at my friend's and mom's jobs who are professional-looking and dumb as doorknobs.
And the normal-dressed ones are usually the applicants who blow the socks off their future-boss. (In a good way!)--Looks ain't everything, sister!
