Jealousy is not envy.

A jealous husband wants what is his. An envious husband wants what is not his.

One of my girlfriends would get jealous when I got chatty with other women. She was envious of her friend who had a cooler boyfriend.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 sums up love perfectly

4)Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5)It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6)Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7)It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

1 John 4:16
And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.

hi i'd like to respond to your question and also to jon jon's answer. About the idea of "God can be jealous but we cannot." Yes, God is saying "Do what I say, not what I do." A father may use a chainsaw to cut down a tree, but does he want his 4 year old son to do the same? God made the jealousy rule for our protection, because the wrong kind of jealousy ruins relationships, as you have probably witnessed a boyfriend or girlfriend being overly jealous about opposite sex friends, etc. God is perfect and therefore not only has certain rights that are not afforded to us, and are not beneficial to us. His jealousy is good He created everything and therefore deserves to be worshipped above anything and everything else. Has the right to make the laws. The great part is that His laws are for our protection and benefit, not to be a great kill-joy in the sky.

Good question. It is stated that He's a jealous God, it even says His name is Jealous.

Exodus 34:14
Do not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.

I do believe He doesn't want us worshiping false gods or other "forces". He created us - He has a right to feel anyway He wants to - including being jealous when we don't listen to His teachings.

May God Bless all who respond in this forum and keep you in His Unfathomable Mercy. In the name of Jesus Christ, Our Lord, I pray. Amen

One of the commandments:
Thou shalt not worship any other god before me, for I am a jealous god. Plain and simple. I'm 11 and homeschooled. The worst part is, I have to sleep as long as I want! Suckers!

Why would God, given that humans are so small compared to him, care intimately about how much respect we pay him. I don't buy it... since God is omnipotent, he also knows exactly why we don't worship him, so I just don't think he'd get jealous over it. He'd almost have to be completely understanding given his supposed mercy, goodness and knowledge of everything.

You have to remember that the bible was in fact written by man. God didn't jump out of the heavens and pick up a pen and paper and start writing. In saying that... all inspirations come from God. The bible was "inspired" by God but written by man. God "inspires" us to do things or say things but we are still in control of our will. When the authors wrote down the words in the bible, they still wrote with their own personality and views. To say God is a jealous God would mean that some of us humans are more "spiritual" than God himself! What a thought!

I don't see a contradiction here. God is jealous, but it means he wants us to be faithful. He doesn't want us to worship false gods because He knows what is best for us. His jealousy is one way He protects us from doing the wrong thing. What happens when a jealous spouse is no longer jealous? They give up on their spouse. We don't want God to give up on us.

"The idea of an omnipotent God who creates a creature capable of reason, then throws an eternal hissy fit when that creature doesn't spend all his time telling God how wonderful He is... Well it seems like rather insecure behavior for an all powerful, all loving being."

Living for God is like a relationship between a couple. God wants what we want and that is to have a faithful one on one commune with us. When we sin and chase after the world we become unfaithful. I would be jealous to if my wife cheated on me or was just flirting.
