Before you leave you can make your own cd's and music. As silly as it is you can count licenses plates, belive it or not weve seen hawaii and alaska, canada too try to get as many states as you can. Instead of stopping to eat at mickey d's you can make a home made lunch, take stuf for a sandwich and make home made trail mix, having a piece of home on the long journey helps. Try stopping at a local park or rest stop to eat. You can also take pic's every so often along the road of anything interesting you might find. Every couple hours you can try and find soemthing specific along the highway, like look for a furnral home and whoever finds it first gets to ask a truth or dare kind of question. Good luck have fun

Read a good book. Your partner can also enjoy this. Often on long road trips the passenger will read a good book out loud for the enjoyment of everyone in the car.

As far as games go:

The alphabet game: Start by finding an "A" on a road sign, license plate, etc... Proceed through to the letter "Z". The first one to find all the letters in order wins.

Collect State license plates: Keep track of every license plate you see from a different state. Try to collect them all. My wife has been doing this on an ongoing basis for a little over a year now, she has them all (including Hawaii) except for Rhode Island. Apparently those Rhode Islanders don't make the trip down this way very often.

The absolute best thing for long drives are books on tape. They are expensive new, but if you go to a local used book store they are much more reasonable. Or, the library may have a selection as well (though these tend to me limited).

For myself, I find light fiction, such as murder mysteries, horror, and humor, tend to be the most engaging. 'Heavy' topics and genres will put you to sleep.

Also, if you do a lot of long distance driving, get an XM Radio, that way you can listent to the radio the whole way without losing the station.

Buy some audiobooks on CD (or cassette if your car has a player). Some libraries will also let you check them out too. I listened to Dan Brown's Angels and Demons on a recent road trip, and it kept my interest and lasted for about 6 hours!

First of all, never travel eight hours in a car without frequent rest stops. Stretch your legs, breath in fresh air. And, whoever is driving shouldn't be playing games. As a passenger, you can read (if you do not get dizzy doing this) or you can do puzzles or anything . . . just do NOT distract the driver. Or . . . whoever isn't driving can sleep. I do this all the time when my husband is driving. He keeps awake by listening to the radio, and by concentrating on his driving . . . you never know what might cross the road just in front of you!

This might sound really stupid, but on long road trips I have the habit of adding licence plate numbers in my head...

ex: licence plate number DRG 4037------->14

Sometimes I will keep adding the numbers till I get a single digit, so 14 would be 5...You get the idea.
Weird?!?! I think it's part of O.C.D.....LOL!

I like to look at the scenery.

We also listen to recorded books, you can check them out at the library or rent them from Cracker Barrel-and return at any Cracker Barrel.

And we like to play Slug Bug-a new VW Beetle is worth one point, a convertible Beetle is worth three points, an original classic Beetle is worth five points, slugging for a non-Beetle is minus ten points. (watch out for PT Cruisers)

Sing.

Trivia questions (like Trivia Pursuit [I think, if that's the one with tons of cards with questions on them]).

Check out the neighborhoods you pass through.
