It depends on the coach. Some will give the skater liberty in choosing their own appropriate music or some will choose music for them. The up side of letting the skater choose is you already know that the skater enjoys it and will probably "feel" the music better, thus they'll probably skate a better program. The type of music depends on the type of program. If it's a freestyle or long program, usually these are longer in length and are usually songs without lyrics. Long programs are usually classical music, soundtracks or many other similar types of pieces. Short programs or compulsory programs many times are similar in music choices, but the length is made shorter. I believe it depends on the competition, but I have skated some that allowed vocals in short programs, but not long. That obviously opens up the types of music and song choices. Sometimes it hard to pick just one!! Then there are exhibition programs that may or may not be used in competition. Usually there aren't many restrictions on the type of music if it is for a show performance or an entertainment type of program.

For my daughter we choose ten or twenty songs that she really likes, put them on a CD and give them to her coach. And this is a lot but my husband has tons of music between CDs and downloads on the computer so it is nothing for him to pull together a hundred songs.

By the next week her coach comes back with two or three that she really likes and my daughter then chooses from those.

Then we sit down and talk about what the dress should look like as I make her competition dresses.

For the USFSA the songs can't have words but the for the ISI and exhibitions they can. Your coach will know which one you are in.

To see if a song works well for you dance to it on the floor a few times and throw in arm work and foot work and things. Your coach may still tell you it is too fast or slow but it give you an idea.

Most skaters choose their own music with the help of their coach. Typically the music for a competition is classical, but the only real requirement is that you have to have no lyrics, and it has to be within a certain time limit (which depends on your level).

Most of the time the skater comes with a few ideas of songs that would like to skate to and passes them on to the coach. The coach tries his/her best to either let the skater skate to one of those options or come up with a similar piece of music. He/she always has reason for rejecting a song and would only do it if it was neccessary.

Hope this helps ♥

I assume that most skaters have input on the music that they choose, though younger skaters may have coaches select it for them. If you are trying to select your own music, you may have to check the rules for the competitions you want to enter. In top-flight ISU competitions, singles and pairs skaters must choose music without words (but not necessarily without voices), and it has to fit within the time constraint of programs. In terms of what kind of music, skaters run the gamut. I've seen programs that use classical, new age, movie soundtracks, jazz, and even rock and roll and country (not all at the same time, of course).

Well, my friend's coach selected three songs for her to choose from, since the coach has known her and her taste. It's very important in my opinion to connect to the music.

I doubt anyone will say "No, this is the music that you must skate to even though you don't like it". They get to at least have some say, yeah? Differs from coach to coach. One thing for sure, the time and no-lyrics rule apply.

Coaches can send the disc for editing to fit the time!

A lot of times when I hear music I think of skating, and I just begin some type of program in my mind. A lot of times I'll be lying in bed listening to music and just thinking of some type of skating program (most of the time totally made up). Sometimes when there's not even music I start thinking of music, and start skating some type of program- I've done that when starting to be sedated for my surgeries several times before- it's somewhat pleasant though because it gets my mind off of the surgery or the procedure that I'm having done.

Hi!!!

I am a competitive figure skater in intermediate. I just landed my double lutz, and i LOVE skating!! Well, i have known my current coaches for 5 years, so they let me choose my own music. And we are really good friends with my coaches!!! But if you have just started skating and arent really friends with your coaches, then they have to pick it for you!! Hope this helps!!!
