Hire a pro. You could spend more fruitlessly attempting to do the job yourself. A pro will spray your carpet and any nearby soft furnishings - armchairs etc - with a non-staining insecticide. Make sure all potentially infested areas are done at the same time. And, totally clear of fleas any animals that come indoors, dogs, cats or whatever, and keep them clear with a flea collar, or you are wasting your money.

Frontline or Advantage are normally used. I haven't had much luck with Frontline this year though. Make sure you use a product that is safe for cats. Your next plan of attack is going to be getting the fleas out of your house. They are on you animals a very limited amount of time--the fleas are actually living in your carpeting, rugs, etc. I had the same problem this year. My son's outside Rottweiler was brought in my house and he brought his fleas with him. I have had dogs for years and never experienced fleas in my home before. This was incredible...and not in a good way. I tried the bombs. No improvement. More bombs..still fleas. So then I went to searching the web. I read about Borax (in the laundry aisle of the supermarket). Sprinke it on your carpet and let it stand for as long as possible. I also read about table salt and also sprinkling that on the carpet and letting it stand. So I did both at the same time. I put it down at night, tiptoed around the next morning to get ready for work and let it set that day too. I then came home and vacuumed. By now I was too nuts to just wait and see if that worked by itself. So I bought some bug spray called TAT--real cheap stuff, available at the dollar store. It stated it killed fleas. So now that the carpet was nice and clean, I sprayed all the carpeting with TAT. I then took my little dog and stayed out of the house until the spray dried on the carpet (about 2 hours). This process worked. I am not sure if it was the Borax, the salt, or the TAT insecticide, but those nasty little creatures are now in flea heaven. By the way, the 3 punch round of Borax, salt, and TAT costs less than just ONE of the bomb treatements (that didn't work anyway). You have to remember to vaccum everyday though, even after it seems the last flea has disappeared. The eggs are tough to kill, so they must be vaccumed, and vacuumed, and vaccumed. The Borax/salt/TAT didn't affect my little 4 pound dog, who cleans herself like a cat. But it certainly affected the fleas. Flea free now for 40 days!

The best stuff i have found (and my mates) is from the vets, its called Acclaim, about £9 a large can, you spray in on the carpets, upholstery, curtains and it lasts for up to 12 months, breaking the life cycle of the fleas. It kills the eggs as well. Get a flea powder/spray/drops to do your animals at the same time.

Its not necessary to buy a shampoo - you can get some pesticide treatment to spray all over the floor after a really thorough vacuum. There are also powder versions.
I recommend getting a strong one from the vet rather than the high street shop versions.
You will need to repeat the treatment at regular intervals and vacuum regularly to beat the fleas but it will work in the end.
Get a strong prescriptive treatment for your pets too!

log onto vet uk.they have a wide range of flea products at cheaper prices than the shops.i used acclaim flea killer on out stair carpet after i found out that's where they were coming from.it kills flea eggs so it breaks the cycle.it does say it takes a couple of weeks to work which made me very suspicious about the product.we were still getting fleas for a couple of weeks then all of a sudden they stopped.to kill the adult fleas i used one of those flea traps with the sticky discs sand a bulb.i had run out of the discs so i just put water in.the fleas are attracted by heat and movement.once they were in there they just drowned.that was back in april and we are still flea free

The soap from the steamcleaner should kill the fleas themselves.. You still likely have eggs that are in the carpet / couch / baseboards etc that are hatching... Eggs are pretty hearty... You have to clean and vacuum the whole house, under the couch, bed, under the couch cushions, dog crate everywhere that the dog goes or fleas could go.. They lay eggs and they hatch when they feel that they will best be able to survive..

If your carpet isn't dirty you don't need to shampoo it but you can spray it with an indoor spray for fleas. I had very good results with Enforcer. You can get it at Lowe's or Home Depot, in the garden section.
