They are simple surgeries that make the cats incapable of reproducing.

Spey refers to the removal of a female cat's reproductive organs.

Neuter refers to the sterilization of a male cat.

Both procedures are simple and done while the animal is under anesthesia.

It is important that people have these procedures done on their pets (preferrably at 5 or 6 months of age) because it prevents certain behavior problems, wandering, fighting, some diseases, and unwanted kittens. Too many cats are dying in shelters because there are too many cats, and not enough good homes!

You'll find the same thing with dogs. This is when you take your cat (usually a kitten) into the vet to be de-sexed/fixed/altered. Spaying is what they call it for females--equivalent to a hysterectomy in women, and neutering is what it is called for males--equivalent to a man having a vasectomy. This prevents any un-wanted pregnancies, and eliminates the breeding instinct in animals. Having your cat/dog spayed or neutered also gives them a much better quality of life all-the-way-around. Hope this is helpful in explaining what spay/neuter is.

You spay a female cat or dog by having the vet remove their ovaries and uterus so that they can no longer reproduce. They also will not go into "heat". Which is a good thing because a female cat in heat is just plain NOISY.

You neuter a male cat or dog by having the vet remove their testicles. Sounds kinda mean, but, there are just too many unwanted animals out there, so, this helps. I think that unless you are a licensed breeder or have a registered animal that you are taking to shows, you should have your animals "fixed".

Spays and Neuters are basically the same thing... It is the surgical removal of the reproductive organs so that the animal cannot have babies (and thus contribute to the feline overpopulation that we're already experiencing).

A spay is technically known as an ovariohysterectomy, where the ovaries and uterus are removed from the female cat.

The neuter is known as a castration, where the testicles are removed from the male cat.

Hope that helps.

It means fixing them so they don't make babies. For females they do a hysterectomy, for males they remove the testicles. Other than the over population of cats, the other reason you should spay or neuter is because it is healthier for them. No chance of cancer on parts they don't have.
