I have experience in air travel, and I can give your some helpful ideas on how to save money. When you book a flight, book a flight on an actual airline web site. Web sites like travelocity.com, orbitz.com, and hotwire.com, have been said to charge passengers to use their web sites. Yes you are paying for the flight via (travel site), but you will have to spend more money, by not booking a flight through an actual airline. When you book a flight through travelocity.com, you spend money for the flight plus you are given a charge for using travelocity.com. I think that's said enough.
This spreing break, I went on vacation to Florida. I traveled on Airtran Airways out of Newark. I had to change planes in Atlanta, and then fly to Orlando. If I flew a major airline, I would have to spend about 800-900 more dollars. I flew with my father, and even he was satisfied with Airtran Airways. Airtran Airways is a smaller airline, and the smaller airlines charge less money then the bigger major airlines. On Airtran Airways, you can fly almost anywhere to Atlanta. The Atlanta airport is a major hub, for Airtran Airways. You said, that you need to fly to Atlanta, so Airtran Airways is one of your options. I am a HUGE fan, of Airtran Airways and their flight-attendants. Their in-flight snack food taste like it came from a first-class resturant, and their flight-attendants are amazing. Their planes are always in clean and good running condition. I do believe they flight to and from Washington DC. To check out their airline, go to www.airtran.com.
The smaller airlines charge less money on tickets. Some of the major airlines like American, United, US Airways, and Continental, charge more money for ticket for more service. Some of the smaller airlines are Spirit Airlines, and Southwest Airlines. Yes not all the smaller airlines fly to and from everywhere, but they can be advantages in many ways, of air travel.
Theres also Delta Airlines, and they fly to and from where you need to get to. The Atlanta Airport is a major hub for Delta Airlines, as it is for Airtran Airways. Goodluck.

Since you cannot surf travel sites at work, try calling the airlines. United has a hub in Dulles, you can try calling them at 1-800-241-6522. Delta is headquartered in Atlanta so you can try calling them at 1-800-221-1212.

Go to a reputable travel agency after work, so you won't have to ***** about your employer blocking travel sites.
Now, you know why they do it. You are not getting paid to book your own vacation.
