Some things to consider:
Collection Agency likely bought this bad debt for pennies on the dollar, in the hope of making money if they actually collect it. Usually, in such cases, it is not worth their while to take you to court, though, of course, pretty much any collection agency always threatens to take people to court if they don't pay, statistically they rarely do.
If you try to work out some payment arrangement with them, they may re-age the debt and it may appear as recent debt on your credit report.
See link below, this woman gives very good advice.

you're in charge and the debt is enforceable. Courts won't enforce a debt that has been in abeyance for 6 years or extra, however the clock began once you stopped paying or while they final chased you up. the save card enterprise have given up wish of you paying. the sequence enterprise make their money by ability of procuring for up previous charges at the cheap and sending out letters in the wish that some people will pay up. Write to the sequence enterprise. Say which you cleared all your charges by way of an affiliation with lenders organised by ability of a debt administration enterprise X years in the past, and which you haven't any longer any checklist of owing them any money. you are going to be able to desire to get a string of computer generated letters asserting your courtroom visual attraction is genuine quickly now and the bailiffs are going to eliminate your furnishings, yet they gained't incredibly do something in the event that they think of you are going to be able to desire to put in a defence.

Sorry, 'debt free and responsible' and trying to avoid a debt that you incurred 6 years ago? The two are not compatible... you are not debt free and you are not being responsible.
It's your debt, pay it. Yes they can send the bailiffs round.

First off you are neither debt free or responsible. In order to be debt free by definition you don't owe any debt. The resposible thig would be to contact the collector and offer them a settlement or just pay off the debt in full.

The collection agencies have no ethics and no laws that govern them. Since you owed the money and did not file bankruptcy, which would have taken you off the hook you are liable unless there is a state or federal law which says that you are not. Check the URL below.
Pay it. They will hassle you to death, they will call you at home, at work, and threaten you with job loss, loss of job security. They really are the worst of all people, as they know no bounds.
Been there, and done that. It's not worth it.

They can continue to attempt collection. They can take you to court. If the debt is beyond the statute of limitations (SOL), you can use this as an affirmative defense in court.
Check here to find the SOL for your state: http://www.fair-debt-collection.com/SOL-by-State.html
