Well, first you have to eliminate the possibility that such feelings of kinship are completely without supernatural influence. It could just be the same as that feeling of kinship one has with a writer one has never met or something: you are interested or moved by the material.
On the spiritual side, there is certainly that contingent who will suggest reincarnation or some variant of it. Others belive in "ancestral memories," meaning you are drawn to those places where your family once lived. I guess it could hypothetically be some sort of coded instinct, but I'm inclined to think it's more to do with personal interests without any mumbo jumbo. Just like how one kid loves country music while another loves hip hop.

"ancient ways of indigenous people" like what ? chewing on animal skin or dieing from small pox or being slaughtered by spaniards, english, french etc. which one of those does any one want to have a "kinship" with

If we rule out some mental disorder, it could be ancestral "genetic" coding. There is some research out there about "genetic memory" and this might, one day prove how and why certain people seem to have this happen.
For years I just loved Irish music, landscapes and Scottish themes. Didn't know why, my ancestry all said I was English-Germanic. But one day I discovered that I have Irish ancestry through following the women back in the family tree rather than the men.
I wonder... ? :)
Here's a google search result page full of info:

Because every person is different, and interprets each stimuli differently from every other person. The way the neurons formed in your brain may make you like certain things over others, or in many cases, the person simply yearns for the "simpler" days of the fantasy, not realising that the Health Care, Sanitation, and Amenities they take for granted today did not exist...

Perhaps they are glimpsing doorways to different dimensions and do not know how to describe the experience(s). Scientists have long postulated and physics people have theories galore about alternate universes and/or other dimensions, maybe these people are able in some small way to tap into this phenomena?

I think we all have a connection to the non-physical, spirits if you will who have experienced the physical world or have yet to. Think of this non-physical perspective not as your great-great grandfather or Billy the Kid but as one synergized source of energy. I think this source communicates with us in ways we observe as feelings or intense feelings not just with voices like in the movies. What exactly they are telling you? I don't know. Maybe nothing maybe you're just feeling the connection.

They once did an experiment with meal worms where they taught a group of worms to run a maze to find food.
The worms were then ground up and fed to other meal worms who were also taught to run through a maze to find food.
The second group of worms learned much faster than the first group.
They drew the conclusion that some "instinct" or other communicated knowledge somehow reached th second set of worms through this process.
