Calling all my fellow spekkies...I would like to ask, if there was completely safe and very cheap laser eye surgery, or perfectly comfortable contact lenses (I'm sure both will be along pretty soon), would you leave the old jam-jars behind without a regret?

I have considered surgery but have decided to keep my jam-jars because I like they way they look on me. It matches my bookworm image.

It would be a dream come true!!! I have extremely poor eyesight and need corrective lenses at all times. I wear daily lenses during the day and glasses in the morning and evening. I'd throw the lot away if there was completely safe and cheap (even not so cheap!) laser surgery available!!!

I wouldn't mind just having reading glasses so I could do that sexy peering over the glasses thing ;o)

If laser surgery was definitely safe, yes. In the long run it would be so much cheaper for me to get that done once than buy new glasses at £400 a pop every few years. Plus the worry of losing them, breaking them, scratching them etc would be gone. And I'd be able to wear sunglasses and still see without having to fork out an extra couple of hundred quid for prescription sunglasses.

Unfortunately, I also like who I look in glasses, but maybe I could get some without prescription lenses to wear when I felt like it.

I chose to keep mind. Glasses among other things are my "trademark", or rather it is the "trademark" among my sisters and I. We have been wearing them since we were "rut rats". I since I was 8 yrs. old. Today i could possibly be your mom lol. As far as contact lenses dealt with all brands, colors and love them..That is what I enjoy about glasses and contacts you can go either way. Yes it is expensive..but we know where to shop for our specs. Laser surgery is a great alternative done my research but I rather stay with the lenses. My oldest had it done five years ago I was there and till this day there are no complaints and no regrets.

I already have! I have worn glasses for years but have now changed to wearing contact lenses I use Focus dailies and can wear them easily for 16 hours straight with no discomfort at all i'd speak to your optician if you want to and even see about getting a free trial of lenses so what have you got to lose also it's a lot cheaper than laser eye surgery!!

I'd probably buy a couple of pairs and put them on when I want to look smart, sexy and intellectual. I don't like wearing glasses all the time but having the choice would be nice.

Contact lenses are okay but can be a pain to get out - especially when you're tired!

Take baby steps go for the contacts first ! at first you will find yourself wanting to adjust your glasses , but ther are none (those who wear contacts know what i talking about) Your First mistake is wanting to look for " cheap " surgery these are your eyes!! If and when you opt for the Surgery you want to make sure you have the best and that does mean paying a little more ..

If I could find contacts that I could wear comfortably, I would stop using my glasses without hesitation. I have dry eyes and allergies though, so I have yet to find comfortable contacts!

As for the surgery, I just don't think I want anyone messing with my eyes unless it's absolutely necessary!

I have been thinking of this for about 50 years. YES. I would, I am sure for awhile, miss having to put them on or take them off or be looking for them constantly. But, eventually, I wouldn't really miss them if my eyes were adjusted to see without glasses. I remember all the gibes as a kid. Coke bottles, four eyes, that sort of thing. I don't really think I would miss that at all. I could be wrong though after all this time?

No offence, but why post in the Ettiquette section?

Personally, I view Lazik as pure vanity for 99% of the people who have it. That and the fact that a small percentage (10%+/-) of people whom have it done end-up worse than before. I know of people with eyesight which is near 20/20 actually go in for it when they don't need it! Mind, I'd live to have my Dad's distance vision...he could clearly see at almost 100m what anyone else would only resolve at 20m!

Now for the contacts issue...this is pure vanity in and of itself. What little actual vanity I have is salved by my wearing frameless lenses. :D

Being a cow and needing reading glasses isn't easy. Cleaning them is often a problem in the milking stalls. And occasionally they drop off in the straw bails and I have to hoof about looking for them. Lazar surgery is out because I've heard of other bovine s having the occasional kidney removed whilst under anaesthetic. And later finding out it's been sold in warmer climbs in steak pies to lady boys. So I wouldn't risk it.
