Because it would make them come home early. It was giving the enemy the dates of when they would be pulling out. Until you actually have any affiliation with the military you will never understand. I live in Japan and my husband is a contractor for the military, and there are N. Koreans always outside the gates taking pics and spying on the American's. Believe me, everyone is watching us, so giving them a date when they out is the most foolish thing you can do. The solders in Iraq are making a lot of money. They get all sorta of different pays, they get hostile fire pay, separation pay, they get paid so much a day for their expenses, a lot of them come back from Iraq with 10,000 + in the bank, and thats for about 3-4 months, imagine the ones that are their for 12-18 months, plus your money is tax free when your there. They don't need more money. It would be nice, but not nessesary

Good paying jobs generally require skills that are in demand. Some of the skills taught by the military are of this kind, most are not. I was trained as a sonar technician, specifically for a BQQ3 Sonar Suite. It was more or less obsolete by the time I joined the fleet. There is no civilian job that I can think of that requires knowledge of the BQQ3. I never expected there to be. I saved most of my money, investing in a house and when I got out I used my GI bill to go back to school for 5 years, renting out the house, and living fairly well thanks to the extra income. Our custodian at work was in vietnam and was a sniper. There are no good jobs for snipers. Even good snipers. Since he didn't go back to work he's got a mop, and I've got a lot of extra time to write stuff on the internet. The government does not owe you a good paying job. It payed you well for your service. Now you're out and you've got to survive on your own.

I can't believe the first person said meaningful comment/question. It is very meaningful that you said our soldiers are home from Iraq. Hello, they are fighting for our country. Tell them to come to Jackson WY. We had 2900 jobs that could not be filled this summer. They pay great and it is a peaceful area.

Plus you have sailors, Marines etc. That are over 40 and unemployable. Went from being a Navy Chief with 60 people working for me to a flunkie on minimun wage because my retirement check afte 23 year didn't cover basic expences.
Is Iraq all the American people remember ? What about Centam, Nirgauga, Beruit, FRY, Desret Storm 1 and 2 , Vietnam etc ?
I am so friggin discusted I moved to the Philippines where my military retirement affords me a "decent" standard of living after my 23 years of service to my country. My Country ? What I joke. I can't afford to live there.

If you want meaningful comment that will help, you'll have to be more specific.
Easy there "grand life". I'm all about supporting the troops, including with employment, but I cannot make recommendations with the information given. No mention of where, age, rank, skills, etc. Throwing out generalizations doesn't really help at this point. Specific information is required to truly help this Veteran get a position he can excel at.

When it's a regular ETS, the military DOES help with job placement. However, the soldier is supposed to plan ahead of time, and look for jobs in his (or her) area, and see the people that are available to help him (or her).
If a soldier doesn't do that, it's their own fault if they can't find a job.
