You know how a baby who can't speak at all only has crying to express its thoughts, so that you never know if s/he is in pain, wet, or hungry? Well, someone with a limited vocabulary has similar problems expressing thoughts precisely and therefore being completely understood. Sometimes finding the exact word to express something allows an individual to create greater empathy and understanding, because everyone knows very specifically what they were thinking or feeling. Also, a greater vocabulary encourages more expression, because there will be less repetition of certain words due to the person't ability to express the same thing in multiple ways.

In not wanting to be repetitive-
Shared vocabulary often replaces long definitions/explanations. If we share the definition of a word/phrase, i.e. cat, neither of us has to explain to the other what "cat" is. Of course, words often go well beyond the simplicity of "cat."
