In UK law it is illegal to carry anything that could be considered an offensive weapon in public. I read of an eccentric young man who was prosecuted for carrying a walking stick in public because he did not need it and it could be used as a weapon! The police are also under a great deal of pressure to make as many weapon arrests as possible to boost their performance figures. I was with a friend in the local park when two gangs in the distance started fighting. We phoned the police. He went to his car and picked up a baseball bat and ball. The police stopped him on his way back into the park and asked him what was going on and he told them. They asked about the bat at which point he just waved the ball at them. They shrugged their shoulders knowingly and let him through. Does anybody else have any thoughts on what defensive items you can legally carry e.g. a pointed golfing umbrella on a rainy day?
