'we need to face the fact that any deity who needs to be protected from the truth arising from any source has died already'

what do you say to this?

Well, he was probably responding to the "God is dead" line that went around awhile back. Otherwise he would probably have said something like "is imaginary" or "is logically impossible," or something. A deity who cannot except truth is not a deity in my book. He/she/it/they are supposed to BE truth!
