Actually I found a recipe that uses non-hydroginated shortening, but I am sure Earth Balance would work too.
Here's the recipe:
Vegan Fluffy Buttercream Frosting
Time/Servings
Total Time: 8 minutes
Active Time: 8 minutes
Makes: 4 cups
Ingredients
1/2 cup nonhydrogenated shortening
1/2 cup nonhydrogenated margarine, we use Earth Balance
3 1/2 cups powdered sugar, sifted if clumpy
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/4 cup plain soy milk or soy creamer
Instructions
Beat the shortening and margarine together until well combined and fluffy. Add the sugar and beat for about 3 more minutes.
Add the vanilla and soy milk, and beat for another 5 to 7 minutes until fluffy.
Note: Adding any flavoring to a basic frosting will change the flavor.
Hope that helps. :-)

Those ingredients plus a little milk for thinner is exactly how you make a basic butter cream frosting. You can add whatever extracts you like to give it a different taste. If you like peanut butter you can also add that to make peanut butter frosting.

That's how I make it, adding milk to get the proper consistency. Much better than the canned stuff, and no preservatives. Add cocoa powder for chocolate.

Yeah, that's how I make it too. And you can add any flavors you want to and it will be good. And don't forget the milk.
