She prescribed Lexapro, but the insomnia associated with it prompted me to stop. Based on the info that Ive gotten from researching, tere are Pros and Cons to taking anti depressants . one of the cons is the withdrawl smyptoms associated with anti depressants once youre deemed "not depressed anymore". Has anyone experienced this? Any suggestions other than anti depressants to get through depression?

I have been suffering from post partum depression for the past one year when I gave birth to a baby boy. I couldn't stop thinking about how my husband loves him more than me and how things might be better if he wasn't born at all. Thus, I stayed away from him because I knew that I might do something I will regret for the rest of my life.

Almost instantly I went to a therapist and convince them that I need help. Among other things, I've tried herbal supplements and other book to treat depression but nothing works like the Depression Free Method. So now I'm proud to say I'm one of the happiest mother in the world. My husband loves us both very much and I thank the Lord for the blessing he gave us.

Depression Free Method?

Moderate depression, huh ? That's like being a little bit pregnant.

Understand doctors are drug pushers. Most know little about how these drugs work and what the side effects are. Further understand that a drug does not work the same in all people and you have to find out how it works in you. The dosage amount can get different reactions in the same person. I would like to pass a law stating that a doctor must take the same medication they are prescribing their patient. That would effect some changes, wouldn't it.

It pays to get smart about your meds and not rely on a person who has almost no understanding how people get well.

I just started Lexapro too and by day 4, nothing really has happened though I have noticed my anger is a bit more in check. I've heard a lot of people rave about zoloft, maybe try that one? I think it's worth trying the antidepressant for a while, it's better than living everyday like you want to die. Your doctor can properly wean you off of it. No worries. As for getting through depression without meds, my only suggestion would be, if there is a constant situation which is upsetting in your life, remove that situation from your life completly; if your just depressed and dont know why, take the pills. Feel better.

Yes. BQ’s: 1)Do you have someone in your life who not understands what you’re going through, per se, but it at least trying to?: No. No one tries to understand - not a depressed persons thoughts or anything but I am being serious. 2)How long have you had depression? My whole life. 3)Have you ever thought about suicide or any other form of self harm? Thought about self harm... taking strong medicine for emotional pain but I had enough logic not to. Never would I do any of the stuff I think of anyway. No never thought about suicide, if I have it was only to imagine what every ones life would be like. 4)Are you on any medication/therapeutic treatment for your depression? No. I refuse to take it until my counseling is over and if I am not better. Obviously I am in treatment I have just stated lol!

First things first... Usually life's experiences are causing you to have depression or symptoms of depression. Secondly it is very important to remember that drugs are only 20% of the equation, legal or otherwise. Diet, Exercise, Social Interaction, Money, Job And Family can all contribute to the problems. Putting things in perspective sometimes is the best solution but not always easy. Start with the things that bug you the most take one problem at a time and only worry about things that you personally have the ability to change. Breath, life is good and this to shall pass. I'm routing for you!

Moderately depressed and she prescribed meds. WTF? Maybe you just need to deal with the issues that are making you depressed/anxious. Did she send you to a councelor or psycologist like she should have?
I've been on meds before and when I quit I went through anxiety attacks, bad ones. Once I was back on it I was better. To not have withdrawl issues you need to take yourself off of them slowly. First start by taking only a half dose a day and then every other day for a while and maybe every three days and then that should be good enough to quit safely.

See a psychiatrist, rather than your personal doctor. A psychiatrist is better equipped to not only diagnose a problem, but propose a solution.

There are ups and downs to every prescription. My recommendation is, that if you feel you are depressed, go ahead and see that psychiatrist and get a true diagnosis. Find out if there are medications that can fit your lifestyle, or, better yet, ways to manage the depression without the use of chemicals. It's possible that you can figure out a way to live your life without the use of a pill to elevate your mood.

I personally seek out friends when I need them, or I write, or I listen to music that will elevate my mood. That places me in the mindset that life isn't as bad as I imagine it to be, and I can get through it. I used to be on medication, but I ended up throwing them away and replacing it with diversion tactics and talk therapy. I don't necessarily need to pay someone, because I have friends that are willing to lend an ear when I need it. Eventually, you learn to live on your own and find a way to make your life a lot more bearable without being co-dependent.

However, I feel that this matter is best discussed with a qualified psychiatrist who is better equipped to handle the situation.

Rest easy, knowing that things will pass and you will survive. Best of luck on your journey to feeling better.

If the Lexapro causes you insomnia, there are tons of other antidepressants out there that don't. But frankly I would consult a psychiatrist, not a general practitioner about the need for an antidepressant. It is pretty much the rule of thumb, that once you start on them, you take them for life.
There are a few that are intended for the short term, like Elavil, but they can be hard to withdraw from, you have to taper slowly. Also, antidepressants are only half the picture, if you suffer with moderate clinical depression, you need to be in therapy to get at the root of the problem. The medication helps you to think more clearly, but they don't fix the issue that made you depressed to begin with, and that has to be dealt with, or the depression just gets worse.

Follow your doctor's advice.

But the following will not hurt:

a) Engage in moderate physical exercises on a regular basis

b) Participate in lot of group activities each week: watching movies in a cinema hall, volunteering, working out in a gym, taking mass transit: you will not feel isolated

c) Set up small goals and accomplish them. They could be very trivial to start with: for instance: spending one evening in the park etc.

d) Engage in recreational activities such as reading, watching videos and DVDs

e) Read inspirational books like Don't sweat the small stuff etc.

f) Ensure that you look the very best: good clothes, nice perfume, good hair grooming: this will uplift your mood

g) Spirituality is also advisable so is meditation.
