Someone, operating under a special chain of command within the United States Air Force, just stole a nuclear weapon.

I hope this is just a rumor.

I am only aware of the BIG WHOOPS when the B-52 transported 6 nukes on accident.

Air Force investigates mistaken transport of nuclear warheads

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Six nuclear warheads on cruise missiles were mistakenly carried on a flight from North Dakota to Louisiana last week, prompting a major investigation, military officials have confirmed.

EDIT:
Here is a great write up on it from Spook86. He states it was only 5...

This isn't a rumor. Google Operation Noble Reserve. Back in July Noble Reserve was a drill in order to find out what would happen if a nuclear weapon was detonated off the Pacific coast. Now all the Airforce reserves were deployed to DC and are on a stand down for a drill coming up in a few days. In other words: we're ******!

I'll go with rumor until I hear otherwise.

While the transporting of six nuclear missiles from one base to another was a major screwup. Heads have already rolled over this one. A Broken Arrow (nuclear warhead lost) is something that isn't kept quiet. The last time it happened (B-52 went down off the coast of Spain) it was reported immediatly and htere was a massive recovery effort immediatly started.

ALL nuclear warheads are under a special chain of command. This is nothing new.

Incredible that I heard about this story for a day, then it disappeared. This yet again borders on sinister behavior. The only thing that keeps me calm is that I would like to think there would be an easier way to get a hold of a nuke if you are that high up...

Don't worry I know exactly what happened to number six. The Officer in charge of the recovery operation was none other than GWB. He had to number the missiles as they were recovered so of course he used his favorite crayons and marked them as they were recovered 0,1,2,3,4,5. To avoid a lot of fuss GWB has commissioned acclaimed German bespoke urinal maker Tyler Durden to make a seventh missile from Play dough to quell any confusion.

Actually, 6 went missing, 5 were recovered. Probably #6 fell off the truck. Apparently, now with unveiling of Russia's "Father of All Bombs," nukes will become obsolete because they are not very "green." Leave it to the good ol' USSR to be environmentally concerned in their mass extermination dreams.

All stories on sept 5th say five.
Anything newer than sept 5th updated the number to six.
There would be a real problem if it started out at six and went to five.
