Try the East Village or Alphabet City, Avenues A and B. It's not like it was during the late 70s and early 80s, but then again everything else in NYC has changed with the times. For ads picked up the Village Voice or free weeklies in boxes or stores.

Yes, there are lots of venues for all kinds bands in NYC...however, there are also hundreds of bands so expect lots of competition and little money...usually the money(if any) is a function of how many people you can draw...makes it that much tougher if you are from out of town with no following.

theres still a good scene around. Try getting a gig at the knitting factory, they sometimes have local band battles. try www.concertsfirst.com, they used to book them there, they still might. Also look up Pianos. Good luck.
