If a person is writing down a surname based on what they are hearing

-- B is often replaced with P,F,and V. Try Caparusso and Cavarusso
-- The double S may be dropped. Look for Caparuso
-- C can change to K or S. Look for Kabarusso, Saparusso, Cabaruco
-- A and O are easily exchanged or misread when indexed. Try Coporussa and Cobarossa
-- Letter combinations can be blended together. RU may become M for Cabamso; SS may become M for Cabarumo

Depends on the ethnicity of the name. Different languages have different spelling conventions.

Have you tried that spelling with a Google search? Sometimes you'll get alternate spelling suggestions.
