okay i have never ever liked smoking in my entire life. i am an 19 year old guy dealing with waves of depression. first, i have had small teen depression history but i quickly got over it. my dad got critically ill over the summer and then passed away. i have stooped super low in depression and i needed to find an outlet to let it all go. i feel really lonely now and miss dad all the time. my mom hasnt been particularly well either. started college and the college stress is mounting as well. i don't know how i started, maybe i was just trying something new for the thrill of it, but i have smoked quite a few cigarettes by now. 6 i think in the past month. i have never ever liked smoking and stopped my friends from doing so myself in the past but now i don't know what's gotten into me. please help me find a way away before i get addicted. thanks
and a way to deal with the depression too

Don't buy cigarettes. Don't take any when offered. Stay away from smoky places. Do something positive for yourself, something you like to do, to help you feel better. Cigarettes will not help you feel better in any way. They'll kill you.

Hi!

Well, the best way to not smoke is not to pick up that first cigarette.. Take it from me.. i quit for two years and because of my life situation and stress and depression, i started again!

I wish i never did..

Maybe you could buy a package of hard candy, and when you have an urge to smoke, just pop a pc of candy in your mouth. If you are worried about sugar, there is sugar free candy also...

Just say NO to yourself, also.

As for your depression, there are a lot of resources on the web.. maybe do a yahoo search for COPING WITH DEPRESSION, or DEPRESSION SELF-HELP.

Do you have a counselor at school? Perhaps this person can listen, or give you advice about therapy in your area. Many counties in the USA offer free or very low cost therapy (via the use of grants) to people with low incomes -- you are in college, so i'm assuming you have a lower income. If you can't find information in the phone book, maybe the health department could direct you? Otherwise, some mental health clinics do apply for grants for clients, also. You have to contact their business office.

I sure wish you all the best. Depression is difficult. I'm sorry for your loss and your situation...

I hope you will be able to take care of YOU too -- and try to move forward..... i bet that is what your Dad would want for you as well... I'm sure he'd want you to put your best foot forward.

You can also do a web search on COPING WITH GRIEF. Sometimes we don't understand that it takes a while to get through our grief. There are a lot of websites on the subject, which might be helpful for you.

Thinking of you!

Whenever you feel like a cigarette, drink a bottle of water, chew a piece of gum, or go for a quick walk. Exchange the bad behavior for something good for you. Also, take the money that you would have spent on the cigarettes and put it in a box or jar to save for something special.

You've gone through a lot of stuff recently and the transition to college can be made more difficult when your support system is broken.

Your campus most likely has free or discounted mental health services where you can go and talk confidentially to a counselor. Take advantage of this!

In the meantime, replace negative behaviors with positive ones.

I'm sorry about your dad - my best to you and your family.

One day at a time.

If you smoking more then a pack a day you may need to taper down 1st. then go cold turkey, no patch no nothing just tough it out for a few days. After about 3 days the worst is over. Been there done that.

deal with the depression by talking with a friend or counselor.

You have to want to quit more then you want to keep doing it.

If you feel this is a reaction to depression or stress you might want to reach out and see what kind of medical help your college offers for this sort of thing. Even if they don't offer help you want to try to find alternate ways of relievling the stress,

You just started college and can start many things because they are new however you can also start yoga, or meditation, or any other number of new stress reliving activities too.

Snap out of it. Taking 'refuge' in cigarettes and stuff will just make you more weak. Everytime you venture that way, pause a while to think of why you're pulling yourself down? Why do you need to smoke? Why do you need to escape? And what is it that you're not able to deal with?

Have courage. Be bold. The world likes a fighter and you've got to fight back. If nothing, think about your mother. You're all she's got, man!

Never smoke another cigarette again or you will become addicted to them for the rest of your life.

Go see your family doctor & tell him about your depression. There are medications he/she can give you to help get you through this rough time in your life.

focus your interest into sports! Aim to excel in whatever sport activity you like, and you will realize that smoking will never help you reach that goal.

remind your friends and family to help you stay away from smoking. you can enjoy friends, family and life itself smoke-free.

I'm a smoker, i wanted to quit for several reasons aside from health, but it's very difficult to quit. So don't start, or you'll regret how difficult it will be to quit when you really have to.

Spend time including your honey's family participants so as that your babies get to make certain the the holiday journeys are approximately love no longer chaos. good success with each thing.
