Normally on every new moon day (Amavasya) one is expected to leave Tarpanas.

If possible on first beginning dates of Uttarayan and Dakshinayan.

Next is during Mahalaya Paksha 15 days that comes during the second fortnight of Bhadhrapada month.

If all the above individually or collectively is not possible on the death anniversary dates of parents.

Even if this is also not possible one can perform during their visits to Pilgrim centres located on the banks of rivers or a ocean.

atleast once in a year, it can be either on the day soul departed from the body or there are special days when oblations to the departed are performed for which you will have to refer astrological calendars or you can contact a good astrologer.
