For many years, I have suffered from a low self-esteem, with bouts of severe depression and moments of high anxiety. I used to deal with these issues by self-medicating with alcohol, but my liver enzymes are elevated (ALT is 74) so I'm almost afraid to drink too much any more.

I was feeling ok this year until I went to visit my Grandma for a few weeks. She recently married again at 70, and she and her new husband, David, were usually nice to me before they got married. But I soon realized that David is a phony, a man who uses religion to manipulate people, and that he has a mean streak. It was so bad that I wound up buying a plane ticket home!

But since then, I haven't felt emotionally well. I've been severely depressed about everything in my life. I sometimes cry for no reason, I can't sleep, I overeat, and can't make myself finish my schoolwork (I'm a 32 year old college student). I feel like I've gotten over the situation, but can't get back on track. What's wrong with me?

This must have really triggered something in you. Was your Father or Mother a lot like your step-grandfather? Is this bringing back some sort of disturbing memories from the past?

Also, if you were brought up like me where there wasn't abuse, these sort of things can be very disturbing to the psyche I think. Maybe you were traumatized by it and are having some sort of post traumatic stress from it?? Not sure. A lot of what you speak about reminds me of clinical depression as I suffer from that myself. Sure nothing to sneeze at if you know what I mean. I sure do hope you feel better soon and hope that I have helped in some small way. Good luck to you....might take one of those self quizzes on clinical depression that you can find online. You may just need a little therapy or be on meds for a short time to feel better. Feel better!

Ok friend, do you wanna accept advice from total strangers on the internet, or would you prefer to help yourself? Yes I know, you've got it tough, but you're not the only one. You make your own way in this world, yet you seem to be acting helpless, as if you have no control over your life's direction.

Would you prefer to be fighting over in Iraq or Afghanistan? Or a poor, destitute, homeless person? Dude, only you can control your life's destiny. Make an effort to be positive; start excercising more; make a determination that you're gonna succeed in school. Stop dwelling on Grandma's life: it's her life, not yours. Even if she's being scammed.

Bottom line friend: If you REALLY want to get healthy, then you will! And I do believe that you will. Best of luck.

hi hon... not sure what is "wrong" in your life, but i'd like to say i'm glad you dont' drink anymore... i'm a recovering alcoholic, so i can relate....you've made the first step toward taking care of you by not drinking.

I'm sorry about your grandma's situation. You need to remember she's an adult, and for whatever reason, she chose this man (maybe she likes him?).... but i'm sorry you had a bad experience, and i hope he is treating your grandmother well (maybe you are worried for HER?)

If you are depressed, perhaps you can find out if there is a county mental health service where you live. contact business offices of mental health clinics to see if they apply for grants for their low income clients (seeing how you're in school, i'm assuming you have limited funds?).

therapy does work if we work it.

another suggestion i have is to see your family doctor. let him know how you feel, about your eating habits, the crying and sleep issues... doctors are familiar with depression, and i'm sure yours will do everything he or she can to help.

you deserve good help... i know it's hard, but as soon as you can get up, and take action for YOU... you are worth it!

hugs

Emotional illness begins from the stress of self-acceptance
Mental illness begins from not being accepted
Spiritual illness begins from not knowing what's acceptable

Don't dwell on what you can't control and what unfortunately is. What you believe leads to what you choose, and therefore, to what you get out of life. If you believe you're good and you deserve good things, you'll 'attract' it in naturally, through your choices. Call it the law of attraction, if you will, but the fact is -- thoughts become life. To change life, change your perception of reality. Everything else falls into place.

please seek proffesional help (and i'm not saying that in a sarcastic tone by any means), medication might be needed. Many people suffer from depression, you are not alone. talking to a therapist might help... if your grandmother's choice in life partners is disturbing you like this, i think there is more than likely more behind it....
Hope you feel better dear. And as a last resort, when i am sad: chocolate and a feel-good movie always lift my spirits.
