Americans do not call bacon ham. Americans call the cut that is bacon, bacon and the portion of the but or shank, ham. Why do you ask?

Actually, the Us terminology is the more etymologically correct. The origin of the word ham is from several different languages' word meaning "bone".
We call the cut of meat from around the thighbone "ham" and our bacon is meat from the belly, where there are no bones.
What you call ham is the tenderloin from next to the spine, so I suppose that could be OK-but it's a moot point, since all terms refer to a cut of pork that is most often cured and/or smoked.

Americans call bacon bacon and ham ham. Maybe you met up with someone from a particular region in the States that is using regional terminology.

well first of all.. what do you consider to be ham? because a ham is a big piece of pig basically. it's not just thinly sliced pieces of it. bacon is what you fry up in the morning, in a frying pan, ham can be thin, but it is generally served as as a huge roast, during holidays and such. besides, us americans have a bunch of words for the same thing, and a bunch of meanings for one word.

u sure about that cause I read in the old west that they call it bacon already. The ham they sliced thinly and salted it perhaps just like their beef jerky. U know, salting and drying is one way of food preservation during those times.

well as an American let me say this.
Bacon is the strips you fry up for breakfast, I do not call it ham. It is pork cut into fatty strips that taste good with eggs.
Ham is the leg portion of the pork that we bake for Christmas dinner.
hope this helps, I know there are alot of different terms used between cultures that take some getting used to.

Why do they call beef ham too (as in hamburgers)?
By the way, Lewis R, Brits call cigarettes F A Gs, not faggots. Faggots are a traditional food which some Brits like and some don't!
