I love him, but he gets stupid when he drinks too much

Yes. Many a dignified and happy event has been spoiled by a person who has raised his glass too many times. Have a talk with your brother beforehand, and definitely limit his drinking if he's the kind that can be disruptive from too much alcohol. Good luck, and congratulations!

Trying to limit his drinking from the outside (asking the bartender not to serve him, or watching him drinking and forcing him to stop at a certain point) is probably asking for a confrontation at the wedding when he might already be drunk. You may just want to sit down with him before the wedding, and let him know your concerns. Also stress that you need him to stand up for you at the wedding, and that's important to you that he act responsibly. Maybe you could give him a job that would keep him busy for a while, like overseeing the guest book.

I would talk to him before the wedding and see how he responds. Just explain to him that this is a very important day in your life and you don't want anything to interfere with the purpose of the event... the celebration of love and marriage between you and your new spouse.

If that doesn't go over well, I would speak with my bartender at the wedding, point out your brother, and ask that he make his drinks extremely weak/only serve him beer/whatever you feel comfortable doing.

Yes, it's your wedding. If you don't there may be the possibility that he embarasses you. That is something you and everyone else will remember forever. Have a talk with him and tell him how you feel. He should understand and realize that he needs to only drink a couple so he doesn't cause a scene.

Consider having a dry wedding.

I mean, do you really want to have memories of your big day be watching people get drunk (on your dime if its an open bar) and making fools of themselves?

The only other option would be to have someone monitor his drinking and try to stop him if he tries to go overboard.

Its funny you ask that because my fiancee and I both have family members who act like fools when they are drunk, what family doesn't have one. We have decided to have lite alcohol at our wedding so people can have a small buzz but not buzzed enough to pass out where they stand. Such as coolers, wine and beer. Our families think of that stuff as water so if they want hard liquor, Vodka, Gin, etc. they have to go after my wedding. I don't want no one ruining my day by getting drunk acting like a fool especially if it is going to be videotaped that is a memory I don't want to remember is someone acting a fool at my wedding and messing up my day.

your wedding, your decision. Talk to him first. The last thing you want on your wedding day is for your idiot brother to pick a fight with someone.

You could always ask the bartenders to keep an eye on him. Any professional tenders would know when to cut people off, but if you tell them to keep an eye out they will be more than willing to help you out. Then you can blame them for not serving him and he won't get angry with you or your fiance.

if your wedding is a few months away I suggest you video tape your brother while he is drinking a few times and force him to watch and see what an idiot he is.This may help

You can ask him but he will do what he will anyway. That is unless you physically restrain him to his table.

My wife and I were worried about an alcoholic relative and decided to have a dry reception because of it. We just had people tailgating instead.
